‘Motley’ was formed in 2001 by Martine Shackerley-Bennett to provide a theatre that could be performed in any situation or venue. Having studied and worked on physical theatre Martine put on numerous shows in festivals around the country including Edinburgh and Glastonbury; these proved very successful especially those that were audience interactive. Shortly after studying a course in Commedia dell’Arte Martine was commissioned to write a play for a local pub theatre to be staged in the bar. ‘Feisty Shag the Lad’ was written and ecstatically received by the audience. She was immediately asked to write and stage a sequel and ‘Samuel Vice’ was staged to much acclaim. Following the success of these two shows the company ‘Motley’ was formed on a full time basis and has performed to thousands of spectators. Although outrageously bawdy, with their highly visual style, colourful language and huge phalluses ‘Motley’ has a universal appeal, bringing entertainment and fun to everyone. To the delight of the audience as the plot unfolds, all the skullduggery and deception of the characters and their scheming becomes revealed, which provides a strong moral content to the show.
